This one isn´t easy, I hear it a lot but it´s quite difficult to see and even more difficult to take pictures but Sunday I was lucky and managed to take photos of two.

Lovely Bluethroat. Well done.

And do consider being a Safaripal. Availability is not restrictive. If you can you can but if not then it happens to us all.

It´s been nearly one month since my last addition and it´s getting tougher, yesterday I went to the Alentejo, which is bone dry and desperately needing rain, I think I never saw the plains like that, anyway it was a very nice day and the first new bird was this one.

It´s always great to see the stars of the steppe, even if they don´t add to the count and are far in the distance:

And this one (already counted) I wasn´t really expecting to see (they were 4 with a couple of griffons), quite a beast:

I would call that a very successful day out. Even the repeats were worthwhile.

It was a great day, because of the birds, additions and repeats, but also because of the company and the gastronomic part, it´s not all about birds.

The negative part is the drought which doesn´t seem to have an end there, maybe they need @xelas to visit them .

Send me an invitation and I will be there, over the x-mas week :D!

On a more serious note, I have looked at flights but sorely, Ryanair is or sold-out or is not flying to Portugal (Porto) in December. Air Portugal does, but its fare to Lisbon is around 350,00 pp; to offset the difference in cost I would need to find a really inexpensive accommodation. Any ideas about this (2 persons, as always)?

I can´t provide accommodation but I can check if there´s something with good prices, even though we are having a tourism boom here.

Where from would you fly?

Yesterday I went on a fishing trip hoping to add a few seabirds to my count, I was hoping for a minimum of 5 but it wasn´t meant to be, I got only 1 and the fishery wasn´t better, even though that didn´t bother me.

Besides the Skuas, which were plentiful, there were only gulls, none of them interesting, and lots of gannets, I did take a few pictures I like, although it cab be quite difficult to take nice photos from a boat in the sea, especially of birds buoying because we are both moving up and down.

Despite the challenging conditions your Skua and Gannet photos are very good.

A Great Skua is something special ( to me at least ) and  you certainly took some very good photos of both the Skua and the Gannet. Quality over quantity!

I have a doubt, this Saturday I was at the spot where a snow goose (anser caerulescens) was spotted, probaly the first time there´s a record of the sighting of that species in Portugal, I have pictures but didn´t pay to much attention, however that sighting originated quite a fuss amongst the birding community around here and lots of birders went to the spot to see the bird, which was with a big group of greylag geese.

My question is, do you think there´s a real possibility that the bird in question is a wild astray one?

I know that nobody can know that for sure but maybe any of you guys know about records of other sightings in Europe.

According to Ebird there have been a few  sightings in Northern Spain (one as recent as this year) and in the Cota Donana (one in 1993 and one in 2016). Although it is hard to verify if those were 'escapes' I would say there is certainly a possibility it may be a real vagrant from North America. I suppose there has been no mention of it being a ringed bird?

No, there´s no mention to any ring, I saw there´s a picture in Ebird form this month in northern Spain but it´s an EBC, my pictures are better :D.

They are growing in numbers now and I could wait to get a better picture but it´s time to look for other species.
