A worthy collection.

I have Knot  looked back at your haul but trust you have not missed the Knot with the Turnstones in 87?

@Galana  thanks for pointing it out. I already had it as #75.

Our location attacts a lot of waders at the moment as they come down south from Norway and  Sweden. From here most of them go West and gather in Sout Western Denmark in huge numbers. This morning we had 100+ Dunlins and 200+ Oystercatchers.

#92 Common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus)

Moorhen_5961.JPG.ef58f183c1ae614971e481121f4db4ad.JPG

OK focus, but not perfect.

I am using the center spot only for focusing but take a look at the next picture!

IMG_5967.JPG.65f39ac67cbb97eb69723a8a58fee88d.JPG

Looks like the Gull to the left is in focus. It is obviously not in the center of the picture and there are several meters difference in distance between the Gull and the Moorhen.

Has anyone else had similar issues?

Camera Canon EOS 70D and lens is Tamron 150 - 600 mm G2.

It is possible the camera has grabbed focus on the reflection of the reeds in front of the moorhen. Parallel lines of light and dark can have an impact. But it does seem quit a distance apart.

You could try an experiment in more controlled conditions to see what happens.

I am no expert but this happens a lot when there is water/sun in quantity. I think the 'beam' is refracted.

So it has focussed on the water at just the right range for that gull to be sharp.

Viz. It did OK on the Moorhen against solid non reflective ground.

But what would the self appointed King of EBC know?:P and would you trust him?

Spot focusing is usually reliable for birds but it is possible that you have the camera set so that once you depress the shutter button halfway the focus 'locks'. If this is the case you could get a beep telling you you have achieved focus but if you then move to a different subject without re-focusing on it the image will not be sharp in the area you want it to be. But I'm sure you're aware of that. B)

In the photo with the 'sharp' gull to the left of the image it could simply be that the gull is the same distance from the camera as the 'spot' you focused on, even though it is to one side.

@Soukous    Hi Martin,

I appreciate the comments. The "sharp" gull is definitely closer to the camera than the moorhen, so the gull should not be in focus.

Shutter speed 1/2000 and according to the camera, the focus point is on the the moorhen!

I will try to make some experiments in a more controlled environment.
