297/SP32 Red-breasted Merganser, Platja del Cavet Beach

A red-breasted merganser was seen at the beach, and our guide Carles was excited as they seemed to be quite rare. But the strong winds and strong waves made it challenging to first sight the bird, and then get a good shot before it dived. which it did several times. we ended with a lot of shots with just its body on the waters and its head in the waters.

but it swam closer and Herman was there to get it.

Peter Connan

My sincerest condolances on the passing of Herman's mother. A really terrible way to close off a really terrible year.

In past years we have all posted Well into the new year. Just as long as the photo was taken in 2021, I see no reason why that should change. Oh so close to 300 now!

Very best wishes to the both of you for the coming year!

299/SP35 Eurasian Magpie

We saw the  magpie every day of the 7-day birding trip but took only a couple of shots, the closest of it being on a wire. ah well.

300/SP36 Bluethroat, Embut Wetlands

I'm breaking from the location grouping to put the Bluethroat - which was very high on our target list - as our 300th. Such a beautiful bird. we saw 3, one of which showed quite well, while the other 2 were among the reeds.

You've made me, and everyone else Im sure, terribly jealous with your home numbers this year. Who knew Singapore had such numbers, not me that's for sure. A fantastic 300, and a lovely little bird, the Bluethroat, which Ive never seen.

Isn't it great fun to get to Europe and finally see those Birds we've been seeing on the BY, even they're 'lifers", they're so familiar.

Sorry for your loss, it sounds like you celebrated a good life though, as it should be.

A beauty to celebrate #300, and well deserved congratulations for your birding efforts throughout the 2021.

I'll add my sincere condolences to both of you on the passing away of your mother-in-law and mother. A sad way to end the year. You did manage an amazing score and you both showed us lots of wonderful photos from your home patch and the Spain trip. I fully agree with @Peter Connan. If you have any more, please share those as well.

Great Bluethroat, a very worthy #300! I look forward to the rest of your Spanish birds. My condolences again for your loss.

you said it so well. the birds were so familiar to us thanks to the BYs, and yet were lifers for us. Just so amazing. Now i can't wait for Australia! My sis in law, who lives in Perth too and flew here in early December, says western australia has not changed, for now, the border opening date on Feb 2. so cross fingers, no quarantine.....

305/SP41  Glossy Ibis, Ebro Delta

A familiar species but we were very surprised to find huge flocks of the ibises in Spain. Certainly more than what we have seen in Africa. The flocks were first seen flying into the delta - an awesome sight for us.

306/SP42 Eurasian Spoonbill, Ebro Delta

A single spoonbill standing by the roadside that even when the vehicle came a stop, it did not immediately fly away. you can see how close it was to us as Herman couldn't get it all into the frame. Very pleased to see it.
