873/EC342) Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus melancholicus) / Trauerkönigstyrann.

Wild Sumaco, 18/8/2022. I think everybody who has ever been in the Neotropics knows this one. Super-common and conspicous, often perching on fences and wires.

875/EC344) Golden-Faced Tyrannulet (Zimmerius chrysops) / Goldgesicht-Kleintyrann

Wild Sumaco, 18/8/2022. We were back on the main road, quite enjoyable to see some birds out in the open and not behind five thousand leaves!

876/EC345) Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium brasilianum) / Brasilzwergkauz

Wild Sumaco, 18/8/2022. A terrific surprise. Was photographing some Tyrannulet or something equally thrilling when this Owl flew in out of nowhere and took the Tyrannulets place, saying " Stop taking photos of these boring olive little things that all look the same. Take me, take me, I´m much cooler." Ok. :D

881/EC350) Black-Banded Crake (Laterallus fasciatus) / Streifenbauchralle

Wild Sumaco, 18/8/2022. Byron the Crake whisperer. This took considerable effort on his part, he spent about 20 minutes trying to locate and attract it. I was rewarded with really great views of this secretive bird. Not too many photos of this species around. 1/50!, ISO 5000.

Stunning shot of the crake and no shortage of owls! I am impressed by the fact that you could still use the right name for all the lookalikes when processing your photos. ( or perhaps you couldn’t and we’d believe you anyway…:P)

Your suspicions are understandable Peter. :)

Well, there are subtle differences (wingbars, coloration) but I confess I probably would not have been able to ID many of them. But as mentioned before I was thorough with my ebird lists, and even added the time when I took photos for tricky species (most of them therefore). And I did compare the given Ids with the book/app. So I hope the IDs should be correct.

Byron had brought me to a a small resort under construction he is heavily involved with. A community project looking very nice, aimed at locals and more budget-conscious tourists.

885/EC354) White-Tipped Sicklebill (Eutoxeres aquila) / Weißkehl-Sichelschnabel

Wild Sumaco, 18/8/2022. Very interesting-looking Hummer with its Velociraptor-claw-bill. Sicklebills are most often seen feeding on Heliconia flowers in the dark forest understory; they’re generally uncommon and fast-moving, difficult to get a look at.
