905/EC374) Napo Sabrewing (Campylopterus villaviscensio) / Napodegenflügel

Wild Sumaco, 18/8/2022. A near-threatened species "infrequently encountered" - but not too difficult in Sumaco.

906/EC375) Chestnut-Fronted Macaw (Ara severus) / Rotbugara

Wild Sumaco, 18/8/2022. Since I did not get anything on the trails I spent the last hour before dawn at the village´s soccer place which is slightly elevated. Hoped for some fly-overs, and got two Parrot species. Quite distant but at least a plan that worked.

907/EC376) Military Macaw (Ara militaris) / Soldatenara

Wild Sumaco, 18/8/2022. The largest Macaw in the area. Unfortunately the light was already pretty bad now.

908/EC277) Magpie Tanager (Cissopis leverianus) / Elstertangare

Wild Sumaco, 18/8/2022. For once, a name that makes perfect sense. Quite common.

909/EC378) Channel-Billed Toucan (Ramphastos vitellinus) / Dotterkehltukan

Wild Sumaco, 19/8/2022. Today I was with Manuel. A nice, friendly man and not a bad birder but certainly not in Byron´s league. He´s normally one of the caretakers in the lodge.

910/EC379) Swallow Tanager (Tersina viridis) / Schwalbentangare

Wild Sumaco, 19/8/2022. Why "Swallow"? "Behavior much different from other tanagers: perches upright, often on exposed branches or treetops, and sallies out for insects like a flycatcher." Ok, but wouldn´t Flycatcher Tanager be a much more sensible name then?

Male and (totally different looking female, the latter photo from Mashpi a few days earlier.

911/EC380) Ruddy Pigeon (Patagioenas subvinacea) / Purpurtaube

Wild Sumaco, 19/8/2022. Sometimes I love song descriptions: "a clipped hooting song, “hit the foul pole!”

912/EC381) Red-Billed Tyrannulet (Zimmerius cinereicapilla) / Purpurschnabel-Kleintyrann

Wild Sumaco, 19/8/2022. At least a Tyrannulet with a distinctive feature. It was such a grey and dull day though that I did not see the red bill.

913/EC382) White Hawk (Pseudastur albicollis) / Schneebussard

Wild Sumaco, 19/8/2022. The trails were quite frustrating to be honest. But my mood considerably improved when we found this one.

Rio Silanche, 13/8/2022. Huh, why Rio Silanche again all of a sudden? I had thought I had my best CTF sighting here in Sumaco but my photos clearly showed no, I did not.

923/EC392) Scale-Crested Pygmy-Tyrant (Lophotriccus pileatus) / Rot-Schuppenkopftyrann

Wild Sumaco, 19/8/2022. One of the nemesis birds of the trip for me. Quite common, and very vocal, so we regularly had heard and tried for it. Always without success. It´s an incredibly fast-moving and skulking little bugger. So it felt good to finally snatch it, even though the photos are far from stellar.

I had had high hopes for the afternoon and especially the evening. Manuel was confident he could show me two new Owls and possibly Pauraque. But  about 40 minutes after we had left the lodge the skies opened. Really opened - even though I had an umbrella and a rain jacket I got so soaking wet, I could just as well have jumped into a river. And the rain would not stop. I realized how lucky I had been so far. There had been very dull weather and the occasional shower or drizzle. But nothing like this. There was no chance we could get out again in the evening. And the rain continued through the night and next day, so I could do nothing but stay in my room or at the fire in the dining room.

Wild Sumaco, 20/8/2022. I was to leave the lodge at 09:00 and spent the last hour on the terrace again, staring out in the rain. This cool bird came relatively close to say Good Bye. B)
