Just catching up!

I have only reached one hundred, and what a stunning bird for that number. Love the Broadbills and Bee-eaters also. Not to mention a fine collection of Bulbuls!

I am enjoying this (and look forward to your trip report)

We have seen a lot of northern Thailand … but no south and no Bangkok. So we will come back for more soon.

I am not sure you missed much that you would have seen in Bangkok, except the rather dull shore birds. But the South… definitely going to see something different there. Where are you thinking of going?

My plan is to do 2 weeks of the north, and 2 weeks of the south. One week of the south will be spent on an island (Koh Lantah, Koh Lipe, ...). As always, I am open to any suggestion. One thing is sure, I will go back to spend a few days in Kaeng Krachan NP.

If you like snorkeling or especially if you are already qualified for a bit of simple diving all my nature-loving friends highly recommend the Similan Islands. Just hide away when the boatloads of tourists come (although I believe numbers are strictly controlled now). Very simple accommodation and food options though, so maybe just 2-3 days. There are 2-3 day tours if you don’t want the hassle of getting your own boats/ doing your own research on where to go.

Bangkok-Kaeng Krachan-Pranburi (for Sam Roi Yod National Park)- Surathani (but you can skip and get to the lake in the evening if you have planned well)- Cheow Lan Lake (make sure you get the right boatman and stay in the right place, but I am sure you will search that info)- Khao Sok (for nice accommodation although it is not the only park worth birding around here) - Similans (with or without a night in Khao Lak or Krabi area) and then any of your island choices would be a very, very comfortable driving tour, leaving the car in Krabi maybe. Possibly a bit tight for two weeks with an island retreat at the end, but that’s where to start I think.

The place I would really want to go would be Hala Bala on the border with Malaysia but you need to make up your own mind if it is too much hassle (for most it is, which is why it is still so attractive!). You’d probably have to drop something else to do it (possibly the north and compensate with nicer accommodations at Khao Sok and on Cheow Lan Lake). Unfortunately I don’t think the rains stop down there until late December and you don’t really want to catch the end of the rains anywhere in Thailand if you are birding - they generally go out with a bang!

Happy planning!
