The attached are some photos of a nice pack that I followed for pretty much a full day between Lagoon and Lebala camps (was very happy I had a private vehicle). In the day we had 2 hunts and kills, along with some amazing Dog and Hyena interaction on the 2nd kill. The Hyena stole the kill, and the dogs almost killed it. The only way the Hyena lived was by going backwords into an old tunnel. It was pretty bloodied up, and we didnt think it would live.

A bit of different "perspective".

This taken at Kirkmans Kamp, Sabi Sand, on morning of Sep 16, 2009. Pack of 11 or 12, saw them again late in afternoon when they hunted and killed an impala.

Okay, okay,

all these pics where taken @ Kwando Lebala during our visit in November.

We were out on a drive when we received two radio calls at a time. One saying, that 2 male lions were sighted and one saying that this pack of dogs, the "Southern Pack" had killed an impala just on camp´s doorstep.

We decided to head back to camp as we expected the lions to do their usual nap. We were able to watch all the dog´s action and interaction for more than an hour.

After that we headed to the lions and they were doing what we expected.

We saw 3 different wild dog packs in the Kwando area within 1 week. One lady asked the guide, if he was sure that these animals are endangered as we saw 2 packs within 1 hour. http://safaritalk.net/style_images/safarit...icons/icon4.gif

On our self drive trip to Kruger a week later we saw another pack of wild dogs with puppies in heavy rain.

Three of the Sosian 11 WD pack in pursuit of a Scrub Hare that we watched flush out, the pack raced off in pursuit of the hare and vanished, thinking that was the last we would see of them, all of a sudden the hare turned 180deg's and came straight down the track right past our vehicle!

Things happened so fast and it was all over in a matter of seconds, it was impossible to get everything in focus, so I opted for the WD's here. A special and very fortunate moment indeed.

I've dug up some wild dog photos from a 2006 trip to Botswana. We were lucky enough to witness the Chitabe, Selinda and Lagoon packs take part in successful hunts. I've made a gallery album of selected photos but here are some of my favourites. There are some great photos on this thread so please excuse some of the photos taken by my wife and I. Also, I prefer filming on safari - so another excuse.

Yes, there are Wild Dogs in South Luangwa.

There was a discussion here, where there´s the highest density of Wild Dogs. I don´t want to sound arrogant, but I sometimes think the highest density is there, where we are just travelling in Southern Africa.

A total travel time of around 18 months in Africa and I still havent seen these guys in the wild. Does that hyena have mange? Oris it just an old girl?

One of my all-time best bush moments was seeing 2 different packs of dogs in 1 day. The first pack were in the Khwai area. We found them just as they had killed an impala. They ate then trotted off. We were leaving that day, packed up camp and drove down to the 3rd Bridge are of Moremi. We were having sundowners next to a water-filled pan when 3 dogs totted right past us to drink a few feet away. Magic!

 

And while I think about it...another magical moment was having 2 dogs chase an impala between our tents when we were camping out in the Delta. It was so dark we could just see the white tips of their tails as they flew silently by.
