I love some of these terms that come into the text. Sofa search meant something quite different in my day.

(Like looking for lost spare change just in case anybody thinks I meant something else.!)

Did you get to try some of @michael-ibk's special dessert?

So it is about time I got to 100.

We heard reports of several Spoonbill making odd appearances at Leighton Moss so we stopped by on our way up the motorway and were lucky enough to find 5 of them.  As like last year a long way out but close enough for me to get an improved picture.  All 5 are in the first photo.

And while we were there I was also able to take advantage of a group of Knot being a bit closer than usual. Looks like there is one in summer plumage towards the left of the picture and the Black-tailed Godwits provide more colour on the right.

A couple of weeks ago we went down to Preston Docks to see how the Common Tern colony was doing. At the last recorded count there were 78 nests with around 20 chicks, some on the point of fledging.  Also counted were 4 adult Arctic Terns.  I didn't get these last year so was very pleased when we found one as soon as we arrived.

The Common Terns were putting on a great display chasing each other for fish and all the pontoons had adults busily feeding their young.

And a very obliging adult that came to have his photo taken.

Congrats on the 100th and a lovely tern to help celebrate it!

i notice the boxes - are those provided to encourage the terns to breed or have their habitat vanished and help is provided?

Thank you, yes, this started off as a small project in 2010 by the local bird club.  Each year the number of breeding terns have increased and more nesting boxes were made for them. I read however that the chicks have suffered heavy predation from gulls in recent years.  The full story is here for anyone interested.  http://www.fyldebirdclub.org/preston-dock-terns.html

  • 4 weeks later...

So like most people, pickings are slim at the moment.  Just 3 to add to the count but one of them is new at least.

And a new bird from earlier in the year. That makes 15 new birds this year so far.

Terrific achievement Angie, 100 from the UK. We'll all have to watch out when you head overseas.
