Nice image!!!

I'll leave it to someone else.

Would I have got extra points for naming the subspecies? B)

Hey, if he can do it without knowing the location I'll be very impressed!

Good point.

But OK let's not make it too complicated. This was taken in Maun, Botswana.

I was thinking Subspecies talacoma.

All this taxonomy... I think that's now subsumed by most within the poliocephalus group, which is what I would have called it (it's always a good guess with the wing bar - anything from central TZ south, so there's lots of Africa down there!). But I can't keep up with all these arrangements... Do you know the latest?

At one time I think 9+ different subspecies were recognised. You're right that all of the southern group have been subsumed in poliocephalus, though in my defence "talacoma" was the poliocephalus variant found in Botswana.

I have a soft spot for these birds and was fortunate to be able to contribute images to the volume of the Handbook of BIrds of The World which covers this group, that said I am no expert but what Scotsman could resist a bird that lives in clans? :)

Hey guys,

It's not talacoma.

I'm not into taxonomy that much, but as far as I could verify on the web, it's not in the poliocaphala group either.

Why don't any of you just say it (using the common name). Much more fun keeping the game going. ;)

Sorry Jochen, I've taken the fun out of the game with my post! :(

Okay, it's a White-crested Helmet-Shrike.

I tend to agree with rainbirder, including that talacoma is the (now gone) race that should have been in Bots and is now subsumed within poliocephalus... To qute the bard: "A helmet-shrike by any other name would still smell as sweet".

Naah! We can all learn from taxonomy. ;)

Well done Jan!

It's surprising how often this catches people out.

Now it's your turn.

Ah, didn't know that's how it worked. I'm traveling right now so can't post anything till I get home and go through my photos to find something that might stump people.

Wow... obvious once you know what it is, but it had me stumped. Also made me realise that I have probably never seen a Crowned Crane chick before...

  • 1 month later...

Since the game has died again, I get another chance to use it to confirm an ID. Actually, in this case I don't even have an ID to confirm - it has stumped me. :P

What is this?

As with the last one, taken in Central Kalahari Game Reserve around Christmas.
