The Big Six....?! Cows. Inkishu (Maa)... thousands of them, in the Mara game reserve daily. Especially along the Northern boundary, along the Talek river... they cross into the park nightly, at about sunset. Hundreds of head of cattle in every herd, bells clonking as they cross the Talek river, between adjacent camps and lodges. Sundowners now consist of watching the dust rising from the cattle crossings, as the sun sets over the Mara. There are WAY too many sheep around the manyattas.. overg

Animal Conflict with Humans

Conflict with humans is a major problem across much of Africa as wildlife becomes increasingly confined to ever smaller areas. In Victoria Falls town centre it is not uncommon to have to wait for an elephant or herd of buffalo to move out of the way before being able to enter the infamous bar at Shoestrings or get to the door of the local post office. On the outskirts of town lions are taking the livestock of rural communities; most probably pushed to do so by a decreasing prey base within the

Sigourney Weaver for AEFF, a partnership with Tribeca Film Institute, Rhino Translocations, AEFF on CBS, and more...

As you might have guessed, it's been a busy time for us here at the African Environmental Film Foundation, with very few spare minutes in the day for blogging...but I hope everyone here is well, and managing to plan lots of trips to Africa, despite the glum world economic situation... As you may have guessed, we have much news to report, most of which (fortunately for me) is contained in our latest newsletter, which is now available for download as a PDF document here (sneak preview of the cove

Who am I?

A bunny hugger off course! How many times have I heard the word; BUNNYHUGGER or another GREENIES! Why is it that if ones cares deeply about animals or conservation that in many circles you are frowned upon? When have we become so far removed from our planet and the creatures that share our world that days go by without us even once thinking about what is happening all around us. Global warming is just a word until ones picks up a dead penguin on a beach and then another and another. What

Back in the Masai Mara, after a US adventure.. mainly in various parts of New Mexico. Getting a hot air Balloon pilots licence was an interesting, challenging and very very fun thing to do! The mara is always exciting to come back to, and after the longest break i've had from here in over 2 years, it is especially so this time! There seem to be very few animals around, but November is one of the times when they are most widely dispersed as they move in search of better quality graze and water. T

ALERT Update

Despite continuing uncertainty within Zimbabwe we are determined not to let that slow us down. This last month has seen us make big advances in a number of priority areas; new release sites have been confirmed, new partnerships are being formed and of course the lions themselves are doing what they do best. We have been able to do a lot of groundwork on new projects for CCWA including forming partnerships with other organizations for mutual benefit that will be announced once all the legal nec

The Masai Mara is now suddenly baking.... After an unusually wet August and early september.. the sun is out and the grass is responding by starting to turn dull green and then brown soon after. The unseasonal rains have definitely kept the Gnu here longer than i have witnessed in the past.. just this morning there was a line of them at least 2 km long, moving east to west int he area north of the Talek river, but still to the east of Ol Kiombo... I'm told by reliable sources there are still man

A Leopard for Breakfast and much more action

As is probably quite obvious from my absence around here of late, I haven't had much time for keeping my Wilderness Diary updated either...but we did have a leopard pitch up for breakfast the other day, and the river is constantly alive and kicking....always something going on...not enough time to record it all, but here are a few tales from August...

A Buzz in Cyber Space

First of all, apologies for the lack of blog entires these past few weeks: I've got so much on my plate at the moment, and blogging sadly just doesn't seem to make it to the top of the list very often! Nonetheless, there has been a lot of positive talk about AEFF on the net recently, which goes to show that more and more people are hearing about our educational film work and are interested in becoming involved with and supporting AEFF's mission. Here are a few tasters of what is being said: Th

The Gnu are in the Mara in force, and have been concentrated in the south and west. The Mara triangle has had huge numbers of the Wildebeest over there, and its easy to see why they went straight across the Mara river when they got here! The Conservancy had burnt large areas of the grassland at the right time, so of course all the arttractive fresh green shoots of grass were inviting! Well, now, about 4 weeks into the arrival of the gnu in the Mara, they are moving slowly across the northern se

Lions on the wild side

Recently our lions in stage one have been making amazing progress in their hunting abilities; At Antelope Park eight month old Swahili and Sahara chased a rabbit, but it was just too quick for the young females. At exactly the same time 18 month old Luangwa and Msasa had more luck when they encountered a gang of banded mongoose. The mongoose dived for cover chased by Msasa. One made the mistake of breaking out of another whole and was quickly taken by Luangwa. Luangwa on another occasion go

Not just pretty pictures...

It occurred to me, as I was posting my latest Wilderness Diary entries, how easy it is to enjoy the pretty pictures of all the incredible wildlife that surrounds the AEFF headquarters, and our home, here in the Tsavo region of Kenya. It struck me that it might be easy to forget sometimes that our work here has a very serious and critical mission, for the natural wonders which surround us are every day are being threatened across the continent – indeed across the world. Everything we enjoy today,

Kuruwitu: Between a Rock and a Hard Place

“Kuruwitu: Between a Rock and a Hard Place” is one of the two marine films we are currently producing under our Inspiration series. If you would like to catch up on previous progress reports about this project, you can read my earlier updates here and here. Big Game Week

The week before we left for Nairobi was quite extraordinary from a big game viewing perspective…you see, when you visit the Masai Mara, you can almost guarantee to tick off all the major big game species within a few days, but in Tsavo, this is quite unusual, due to the different terrain and thicker bush. That’s what makes Tsavo such an exciting ecosystem to me, the fact that you never know what you’re going to see…it has a certain mystique…that’s why it makes such a great destination for the se

A Rewarding Day

I am finally back in my office after a hectic, but very fruitful ten days in Nairobi – non-stop meetings, meetings, meetings…but it’s all looking good for AEFF, as we continue to build relationships with partner organizations with whom we hope to grow and flourish over the coming years. Of course, our Nairobi trip started with the prize giving at the Giraffe Center, which was celebrating 25 years in conservation in Kenya, making this year’s environmental awareness competition particularly speci

Zambia Expansion Moves Ahead

Back in 2004 an application was made to ZAWA, the Zambian Wildlife Authority and the Zambian Forestry Commission to lease land in the Dambwa Forest outside Livingstone. A public meeting was held on 19th October 2005 to advise local communities about our plans. On 10th August 2006 Andrew Conolly, founder and Chairman of ALERT flew to Livingstone to sign that lease agreement giving 15,000 acres of the Forest to ALERT. Our intention is to build three release sites; two stage 2 sites (500 &

Loko-motion

Last night we took Lokothula, Langa & Ltalo out again following a successful hunt (an ostrich) five days ago. All three started off with a half hearted stalk on two impala and then on a herd of giraffe. When they came across a duiker only Lokothula even bothered to stalk it so we thought we were in for an unsuccesful night. And then the three 25 month old brothers found some Red Hartebeest. All three got into a stalk but again it was Lokothula that showed the real skill picking out an adult

The Turtle Watcher

As some of you may know, we are currently working on a series of films under the umbrella heading of “Inspiration”. Each Inspiration film highlights a specific issue, through the eyes of an individual (or small organization) who is involved. The series seeks to create role models, whom others can emulate and learn from. Each film will show how people are benefiting by adopting conservation-based or environmentally sustainable initiatives – benefiting not just in terms of personal wellbeing but f
