This seemed to be the only bird that the hotel staff knew about. Whenever I was walking around with my camera, they would point it out to me (not that it was necessary, they are large and noisy birds!)

Congrats on the 400th! and that sure looks like the collared kingfisher we find here in Singapore.

I was curious about your black-naped oriole as our species here is all yellow on the belly for both male and female, and yours looked like a juvenile, so i was surprised to see a photo in Ebird that described a streaked bellied black naped oriole as east asian. interesting.

I do believe that is a brown-throated sunbird when I enlarged it and saw that colour on its throat. first time too i've heard the olive-backed sunbird called an ornate sunbird. :)

glad you were able to visit Phuket but hope you had sufficient rest as well.

The first one I found was very shy and I was pleased to have got a proof shot, but at the end of the holiday a couple of them were around our room making a racket and allowing some better shots

That's it for the lifers. On our bird trip we saw lesser coucal but it was flushed and so no time for a shot. On the kayak trip we saw a kingfisher, which may or may not have been a blue-eared, again, just a fleeting glimpse and probably a black-crested bulbul. Still the ones we had seen before in Sri Lanka to come....

@Tdgraves I showed Herman your shot of the eastern black-naped oriole and he recalled that this sub-species had appeared in Singapore and it was a mega rarity over here. It was called the Chinese Golden Oriole and this species is expected to be a full species soon in the future. A veteran birder wrote a bit of background on it:

I had no idea my new Thailand bird book would be so controversial!

Some lovely photos there. Much admired. I particularly like the cool relaxed body language of the Eastern Spotted Dove as it flies by.

This was the first bird that our guide pointed out. When we met him at the hotel gate, he had his scope out and pointing up a far eucalyptus tree. As a test, he asked us what the bird was. It just looked like a distant silhouette, so this photo has had a lot of processing, as it was our only sighting.
