tdgraves big year 2022 - here's hoping it's (all) better!

That's it for Thailand. I saw a common tailorbird on the last day but it wouldn't pose. I also have a distant pigeon which I cannot identify. There were a lot of duplicates, mainly waders. I think the total was 52, not bad for a beach holiday!

It’s the only shot I have and seemed the best fit from my guide book. Do you have a better suggestion?

You are more than likely correct. Colours look good it's the shape that's a bit odd but probably the angle of the camera and the way the bird has landed.

Jumping in with an open mind I think you have some form of game bird or crake.

I don't know Thai birds to make a firm suggestion.

Belated congratulations on #400, well done! I do understand how disappointing it is when you have a country in mind you want to get to and then it does not work out. But Thailand seems to have been very enjoyable. Many beautiful photos, like Tony I really like the Brahminy Kite in the bay - stunning!

Just looking at the "Purple Heron" photo, and then was looking at @Soukousbirds from India No. 452 and 453.

Two different species of Jacana. The legs and wing shapes look similar to yours (I think!) and the Pheasant Tailed has a chesnut coloured head as well

As you know I am no expert but worth a look?

I am pretty certain your # 420 is not a Purple Heron (sorry, I have to laugh at myself here for sounding like I know what I'm talking about. I don't).  Legs & talons don't look long enough for a Bronze-winged Jacana, but IMO it is probably Jacana or Crake of some sort.

So, from the very small maps in my book, hardly any of the crakes (the legs are the wrong colour) and neither of the jacanas should be there. EBird lists are scarce. However, given the scalloped feathers on the back, I wonder if it is a watercock? That would be a lifer….

That might well be true…

I have seen a Watercock once, flying past our cruise ship in the China Sea but wanted to see one close up for a long time since but having seen one posted on one of the BY threads last year I decided it wasn't such a big dal. Miserable looking brown bird.

That was until this  thread on your No420.

Congratulations on your lifer, I have just dug out my guide book and you have a male approaching breeding plumage I think.

I'm envious!!

Gathering a list of all of the UK birds that I am lacking so far this year, I found one that was seen in Kenya, which I guess I didn't post as I would usually have posted it before now in the UK
