I understand that these used to be called the Red-backed Sea Eagle in Australia. In Langkawi we saw on swooping over the sea and catching food at the beach. We also saw them behaving like the Kites we have at home, eating something held in their talons while flying.

We loved this bird - we thought it a beautiful kingfisher with an unusual selection of colours. Our guide, Wendy, took us to a village which is on a series of narrow waterways. Tourist boats leave from here, but we were there well before the boats started so it was very quiet.

Very common around Frasers HIll - we even saw them while having breakfast at our hotel )though these photos are not from breakfast time - usually not enough light!). Very striking attractive birds we thought.

There are three different Pond Herons in Malaysia Chinese, Indian and Javan. Our guide in Penang said that it is impossible to distinguish them apart in non-breeding colours. The most common is the Chinese Pond Heron, so he said this is the most likely. (But I could of course have claimed all three:D)

Wow, I love the owls and the Brown-winged Kingfisher is already on my wish list. Although why such a beautiful bird has been given such a drab name is beyond me.

The Chestnut-capped Laughingthrush is pretty cool too.
