Well done Russell (for getting a pic posted just in time to save May 21st, as well as an amazing capture!)

A contingency for May 22nd - although I hope others will post.

Mongoose comes from mangus in Marathi (according to Chambers Dictionary) and became mongoose in English in the 17th century.

It was decided some time back by the Oxford Dictionary people that plurals of foreign words could be made in the English style so mongooses is correct.

The same applies to other foreign names like rhinoceros. Who says rhinocerotes these days?

Loving these pictures - much better when they are not my own, and always a surprise.

Sundowner, even cuter I think.

Rainbirder... I think I might know your secret - but I won't tell anyone. ;)

Today's picture is a kind of puzzle - not a very difficult one for Safaritalkers though, I suspect.

Haha, Nappa!

Beautiful, Rainbirder.

PaulT, I know that one. :)

I'm cheating again by posting on a day that already has a photo posted.

This was taken on a mobile safari in Botswana. We watched these guys fight for quite awhile and I've not seen giraffes fighting enough to know if it was real or practice. They did stop and rest a couple of times. They didn't make any sounds other than when they hit each other.

Actually your posts on "the same day" are already a different day for me. Even if I wait until midnight I can't be sure whether someone in the US is going to post later. I think having two on the same day (or even three) is fine.

The shadow on the neck gives that picture a really twisted look! Definitely made me look twice.
